Aborto en Uruguay y América Latina: el posicionamiento de los ciudadanos

Abstract

En la mayoría de los países de América Latina, el aborto es ilegal, aunque existen causas atenuantes y eximentes de su práctica. Sin embargo, estudios realizados en países con procesos liberalizadores por más de dos décadas, como Estados Unidos, muestran la persistencia de actitudes diferentes frente al aborto, que van desde visiones pro vida a visiones pro elección. Este trabajo, a partir del Latinobarómetro 2007, analiza los patrones actitudinales de los individuos ante el aborto, con énfasis en su grado de justificación en función de características socioeconómicas, fe y religiosidad, así como en las características propias de los países. Las estimaciones por mínimos cuadrados ordinarios para 18 países de América Latina muestran que los hombres menores de 40 anos, agnósticos, con alto nivel educativo y acceso socioeconómico son quienes más justifican el aborto; así mismo, Uruguay —en especial, su población femenina— es el país donde más se justifica.
