Abstract

Abstract:This paper presents empirical evidence on the existence of the inverse relation between inflation and unemployment in Colombia. A model of convex Phillips curve extended by expectation is considered. The formation of adaptive expectations in the Colombian economy is identified and having the intention of obtaining a better estimation of inflation, the model introduces variables such as: supply shocks and the inflation of imports. Also, structural changes of the economy are included that allow to differentiate between the short and long term. The nonlinear Phillips curve implies that the sacrifice ratio increases when the unemployment rate is high.
