Elasticidades, precio y efectos de red en un mercado de dos lados. El caso de las tarjetas de crédito en Colombia

Abstract

La estructura y funcionamiento de la industria de tarjetas de pagos -un típico mercado de dos lados- ha sido objeto de un intenso debate a nivel internacional y nacional, el cual ha resultado en regulaciones diversas con efectos directos sobre los precios. Esto se explica en parte por la complejidad de la formación de precios en este mercado, pues no sólo participan una diversidad de actores, sino además existen efectos de red. En el presente estudio se hace una medición para el caso de Colombia de las elasticidades precio de la demanda de tarjetas de crédito de tarjetahabientes y comerciantes, así como de las elasticidades de una demanda frente a la otra. Los resultados ponen en evidencia la existencia de efectos positivos de red con elasticidades disímiles de una demanda respecto a la otra para cada grupo. Sugieren, además, que la vía más eficiente para promover el mercado de tarjetas global es decir incrementar su uso y aceptación es a través del impulso de la demanda de los tarjetahabientes.
