Abstract

******* Studies done in the past in Colombia concerning migration have focused attention on the identification of the determinants of these flows from rural and small or medium size towns to large cities. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the impact that these migrants have had on the living conditions of the city of Cali, Colombia. In order to do it, census information collected in 2005 about all life and recent migration flows to the city are used to access, in a comparative approach, the impacts on demographic, economic, social and environmental conditions of the city while this migration process occur. The main conclusion derived from results is that in the short run, recent migrants produce great negative externalities to the city, mainly in the labor market; in the long run living conditions of migrants are equal or better than those of the natives of the city of Cali.
