Abstract

There has been no consensus in the literature on the relationship between social capital and small firms. It has been thought that social capital re-places and contributes public goods that these firms cannot access, and there is anecdotal evidence in the world of small and informal firms about their participation in associations and groups of social capital. Based on a methodology of instrumental variables, the effect of productivity per worker on participation in social capital groups is estimated. The results suggest that the most productive firms are more likely to belong to associations.
