Después de las reformas de fi nales delos años setenta, China consiguió sudespegue económico a tal punto que,en la actualidad, se consolida comouno de los mercados más importantesdel mundo, recibiendo la atención deinvestigadores y hombres de negociosa lo largo del planeta. En Colombiaexisten pocos estudios que hayanexplorado las relaciones comercialescon China; en tal sentido, el presenteartículo ofrece una amplia revisiónde fuentes estadísticas y referenciasbibliográfi cas, dando luces sobre lascaracterísticas y los factores queafectan las relaciones comercialesbilaterales. Los resultados muestranque, si bien China es un valioso proveedorde mercancías para Colombia,las exportaciones hacia ese país aúnse encuentran por debajo de su potencial,y se genera un défi cit comercialenorme. También muestra que lasexportaciones colombianas haciaChina se hallan concentradas en unospocos productos y que dado el tamañoy potencialidad de esta economía, sedeberían comenzar negociacionescomerciales que busquen la fi rma deun acuerdo de libre comercio que permitaincrementar el comercio entreambos países.
