Educación para la modernización: mitos meritrocráticos en China, México, Estados Unidos y Japón (Traducción)

Abstract

Este artículo critica las concepciones que afirman que la modernización económica hace necesaria la meritocracia, y muestra que los sistemas educativos meritocráticos, lejos de ser económicamente necesarios, retrasan la modernización de las economías no industrializadas y de las economías industrializadas, pues ensenan currículos errados a las personas equivocadas. Primero se presenta la justificación de la educación meritocrótica, basada en la creencia (el mito) de que el talento necesario para dominar la tecnología moderna es escaso.Luego se indica cómo se aplica esa justificación en las políticas educativas de China, México, Estados Unidos y Japón, y se muestra cómo excluyen a la mayoría de los estudiantes de las oportunidades educativas para dominar la tecnología. Finalmente, se resume la evolución de esta justificación para explicar por qué es tan popular esta visión mítica.
