La barbarie y su superación en Francisco Javier Clavijero

Abstract

En sus estudios sobre las culturas indígenas del territorio novohispano, el jesuita ilustrado Francisco Xavier Clavijero recurre con frecuencia a la noción de bárbaro. Esta noción, cuyas implicaciones él desarrolla expresamente, ejerce en su obra una función específica como instrumento interpretativo de la realidad social. La noción se orienta, en última instancia, a favorecer la promoción humana y cultural de los indios a través de la educación. Clavijero continúa, así, la tradición misionológica y pedagógica hispánica que, iniciando su andadura en el siglo XVI, constituiría una de las notas distintivas del dominio español en América.
