Corona Pandemic has Only Minimal Negative Impact on Organ Donors in Germany

Abstract

The continuing Corona pandemic raises the question about the "collateral damages" associated with the crisis. Due to the high strain on hospitals, especially intensive care units, regular operations are restricted and the medical care of other patients respectively is also affected. In this paper, I show that the corona crisis and, in particular, the number of corona patients in intensive care units has not had a major impact on the organ donation rate in Germany. In contrast, other European countries have faced sharply declining numbers of organ donors, while the burden on the health care system has been high.
