Abstract

The study aims to analyze the importance of renewable energy and to assess the progress made by Romania in comparison with the European Union and the objectives set by the Community institutions. I consider that both economic aspects such as job creation or reduction of import dependence, but also environmental aspects, including reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, are important in the discussions on renewable energy in rural areas in Romania. The use of linear regression identified a strong correlation in Romania, for the period 2004-2014, between the share of renewable resources in the final gross energy consumption and import dependence. Given the fact that energy independence is a major issue for each country, the article aims to identify the potential of unused renewable energy in rural areas and also opportunities for the development of renewable energy sources on resources that can be exploited at a high efficiency, an action that will generate positive economic and social effects. Our results reveal the fact that Romania has a high potential for development of rural areas that use renewable energy because Romania has a large volume of renewable resources (sun, wind, water). Under these conditions, it is necessary to adopt policies to support projects that refers to these types of energy.
