Abstract

Romania has currently a varied forestry land, which represents about 28% of the national territory. However, as result of the globalization process, the irrational exploitation of forests can generate a series of imbalances in relation to environmental factors and society. This article attempts to highlight the fact that the forest offers sufficient natural resources of its own that can ensure sustainable development, even if the focus on the intensive exploitation of wood material would reduce its intensity. This aim can be achieve through a deeper and more thorough understanding of the complementary products that the forest provides. The complementary products, so named because they also support the economic performance of the forestry land, make up the range of services and natural elements, representing mainly the berries (including mushrooms, seeds, medicinal and aromatic plants) and/or woody species with specific qualities (resonance spruce). In the balance of the profitability of a forest ecosystem, the literature of the field includes complementary products (auxiliary or non-wood) and the services that can represent the activities of tourism, recreation, hunting and fishing.
