Abstract

This article comes up with the hypothesis that the Egyptian Muslim Brothers? organisational specificities are responsible for their strenghts and but also for their weaknesses. It analyzes the characteristics of their militant socialization. The analysis is based on two types of documents: accounts published by former Muslim Brothers telling the story of how they joined and left the organisation, and documents pertaining to individual preaching which explain how to become a member and a member?s duties within the organisation. The article defends the idea that the Muslim Brotherhood itself aims at making the ?genuine? Muslim. The paper links such an original feature to the ideology of Qutbism which is popular within the dominant part of the leadership of the organisation, that has toughened Hassan al-Banna?s first thoughts.
