Abstract

The Egyptian Army is an institution which is above all other state bureaucracies and is more efficient than any of them. Acting as a shield, it guarantees the survival of the State, while providing the State and local authorities with high-ranking officials. The great narrative it has spun about its own role and makeup is a golden legend which has resulted in norms as well as behavioral patterns. This paper presents the narrative and assesses the extent of its discrepancies with reality. It examines the evolution of the relationship between the presidency, the people and the army, as well as the army?s attitude towards the January 2011 uprising and the subsequent transition.
