Abstract

Since the 1990s, the fast growing metropolises of the South have been characterized by a massive spatial expansion without precedent. The land appropriation supporting the extensive construction of exclusive real estate projects, notably gated communities and private cities, is examined here. The land banks accessible on the margins of the metropolises are increasingly conceived as potential strong bank assets that can be used as a counterpart to the generation of credits and liquidities. A land standard has emerged. With the land titling programmes, the dispossession of common goods for the benefit of markets has spread to the land supporting popular housing.
