Abstract

The saltus is an area of uncultivated self-set vegetation used for grazing. It is the result of the interrelationship between humans and nature. It was traditionally managed as a common resource prior to the French Revolution, but has since been divided up, except in mountain areas. There is currently a return to public property status for some of these zones, with a view to ensuring the protection of nature. The rediscovery of the benefits of pastoral activity for the maintenance of open environments has led to novel forms of governance for agriculture/property/nature relationships.
