Abstract

Charismatic leadership, that is, to rely on one?s charisma to manage collective action, is widely valued in contemporary organizations. While fictional narratives sometimes reflect some great illustrations of charismatic leadership, it also invites us to explore its darker facets. In this article, we focus on the persona of Daenerys Targaryen, one of the central characters of the Game of Thrones tv show, whose fall in the last season sparked much debate. Through an analysis of the episodes of the eight seasons of the series, we highlight two of the main limitations and dangers of this type of leadership: the difficulty to sustain such leadership over time and the total lack of safeguards.
