Abstract

Understanding social innovation for disadvantaged populations in the globalized economy raises a theoretical issue in neo-institutionalist theory since creating new solutions to social problems requires challenging established institutions. The case of catholic missionaries in a poor area in Argentina unveils the way inhabitants become a community generating social innovation through self-management principles. This result contributes both to the literature on community and social innovation in the context of grand challenges.
