Réponses des « survivants » à un plan de sauvegarde de l’emploi. Une grille de lecture

Abstract

This article focuses on organizational changes and human consequences, particularly on « survivors », namely employees remaining in their company after downsizing and/or layoffs. Apart from « Exit/Voice/Loyalty/Neglect » strategies, people facing such situations can experience « Proactive/Passive/Opposing » attitudes. Various typologies, including Chreim?s (2006), were offered to describe employees? interpretations, in context of layoffs. The objective for this paper is to test Chreim?s typology and to understand survivors? responses to social plans. Based on an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, this study identifies three major type of responses: ?Acceptance?, ?Resigned compliance? and ?Ambivalence?. We also distinguish three related profiles of survivors: ?Convicted?, ?Complacent? and ?Ambivalent? ones. We thus contribute to a better understanding of survivors? responses to change and perspectives on organizational legitimacy.
