Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the nature of the interpersonal relationships involved in collaborative consumption and, more specifically, in the exchange of time. Analyzed by the theory of social exchange, a qualitative study of twenty-three consumers allowed to : i) understand the expectations and difficulties of a collaborative relationship based on the exchange of time ; ii) establish a typology of collaborative time-sharing relationships according to the degree of involvement of the offerers/recipients in the task and the degree of openness to a personal relationship. The implications for market and non-market organizations are discussed.
