Abstract

Is it possible to master the economy of great cultural institutions? The history of the Paris Opera leads to that very question. However the analysis of the variable artistical production costs, and the resources of the National Paris Opera of its own, over the last ten years, are very encouraging. The Paris National Opera functions under optimal conditions: the marginal cost of a show is equal to the marginal profit it generates. The variable costs per show tend to decrease while the gate money increases. This evolution can be explained by their strange similarities with the major innovations related to the size, the technology, the organization and the management which have been generated in the industrial field.
