Abstract

The contribution of Gary Becker [1964] to human capital theory quickly became a reference. Yet the initial impulse given to the research program is attributed to Schultz?s figure. Schultz was at the origin of a rich conceptual reflection which contributed in a decisive way to the development of the concept and of the theory of human capital. The aim of this article is to trace Schultz?s intellectual trajectory on the concept of human capital in order to emphasize the importance of its contribution ? which was relatively underestimated, compared to Becker?s work ? to this field.
