The Moderating Effect of Family Firm on SME Innovativeness and Internationalization

Abstract

While family firms (FFs) have attracted growing interest in the entrepreneurship literature, there is limited knowledge on innovation behavior with regard to small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) export capacity. Thus, this study addresses this gap by investigating the moderating effect of family business on SME innovativeness and internationalization. Employing a survey-based model, we tested 261 Greek SMEs. Our findings show that family firms negatively moderate the effect of innovativeness on the number of export destinations. Accordingly, family firms face more difficulties in innovating and exporting. Policymakers should therefore develop specific supportive programs to aid family firms facing these challenges.
