Abstract

Understanding the contexts and reasons that facilitate the rapid growth or even hypergrowth of SMEs is an emerging field of interest for academic research. It also guides business practices, as well as public policies implemented in order to reinforce this phenomenon, given its impacts in terms of creating jobs and economic growth. Studies exploring the determinants of hypergrowth have identified three components: The context, the characteristics of the entrepreneur, and the strategic choices and organizational mechanisms in place within firms. The aim of this literature review, which introduces this special report, is to contribute towards a better understanding of this process and its impacts, by gaining a deeper insight into the context and the profile of the entrepreneur. In terms of the context, this article looks at the effectiveness of public aid initiatives in the growth of startups, as well as exploring the concept of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Regarding the entrepreneur?s profile, we focus on the links between psychological capital, social capital, and entrepreneurial leadership, and how these factors contribute to hypergrowth.
