Abstract

Post-bankruptcy entrepreneurs are victims of stigmatization and have difficulty accessing financial resources for new projects. Through an experiment with 911 bankers, we seek to determine the extent to which the support provided to entrepreneurs by dedicated organizations sends a positive signal to loan officers, capable of dispelling that stigma. Beyond confirming, on a large scale, the existence of a post-bankruptcy stigma, we characterize this phenomenon in terms of perceived capacity and integrity. We also show that entrepreneurs? willingness to discuss this support modifies the framing of the file by the loan officer.
