Parenting: Towards a work-life articulation model of women entrepreneurs

Abstract

Being a female entrepreneur is presented in the literature as either a difficulty or a solution to the work-family and work-life balance. Since these two conflicts increase entrepreneurs? stress and reduce career satisfaction, they deserve to be better understood. The life narrative analysis of 29 women entrepreneurs who created their own business provides a deeper insight into the reasons for their career choice within the context of a whole-life story. Three cases emerge, based on female entrepreneurs? perceptions of the link between work life and private life. Four criteria explain the work-life link: the entrepreneur?s life stage, the business?s life stage (and the conjunction between these two criteria), spousal support, and the entrepreneur?s motivation for creating the business.
