Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of local banking market characteristics on the evolution of bank credit in the French departments using an original dataset (centralisations financières territoriales) provided by the Banque de France. We identify structural breaks in the evolution of bank credit at the local level during the 2007-08 crisis and empirically investigate the influence of local banking market structure on the date and the intensity of the breaks. We find the impact of the crisis to be weaker in local market where regional banks market have a greater market share, are less distant in line with the relationship lending approach. These results are particularly relevant for credit to firms. Classification JEL : G21, G32
