Abstract

Using French surveys of six generations between 1998 and 2013, we examine the migration of university students and graduates by describing their evolving spatial patterns and estimating their effects on employment quality. Results indicate highly educated youths tend to stay in the same region for higher education and employment. Although they remain the majority profile, non-migrants decrease in proportion over the generations. The increase in mobility is partly captured by the rise in return migrants who accept wage losses when returning home. It demonstrates the relational anchorage of graduates and the risk for territories to engage in attractivity policies.
