6. Les sciences sociales, contre la data science ?

Abstract

Over the past few years, data science has become a buzzword. Often depicted as a new discipline that will transform the way we understand the world, it has led to numerous investments in the business world, but also within administrations and in the scientific world. What is it, and what are its intellectual roots? Why did it become so popular, and is it a fad? Analyzing the current enthusiasm in the light of the history of quantitative social sciences ?a forgotten but vital predecessor?, this article reflects on these questions, as well as on some current transformations in the ways of understanding the social world.
