Abstract

There are very numerous theories explaining China?s high household saving rate ever since the year 2000. A new and interesting approach recently developed by Wei and Zhang (2011) proposes an alternative explanation for the saving motive which might shed new light on this old puzzle: ?men save in order to improve their relative standing in the marriage market. When the sex ratio (the number of men per woman in the premarital cohort) rises, families with sons compete with each other by raising their saving rate in response to their ever-rising pressure in the marriage market.? This new theory makes an interesting link between China?s demographic imbalances and macroeconomic imbalances and puts forward the economics of gender for the understanding of broad macroeconomic issues, with discussions on its possible consequences on the Chinese domestic economy and on global imbalances, especially regarding the Asian saving glut.
