Après un demi-siècle, l’économie informelle reste un concept heuristique et un ensemble flou

Abstract

Fifty years of ongoing research suggest that the concept of informal economy has certain ambiguities. The various theories ? dualism, structuralism, and institutionalism ? do not capture the same causes of informality, nor the same mechanisms of adjustment on the markets. The ever-broadening definition of the informal economy remains dependent on the genesis of its various measurement units: businesses or employment? Trends and cycles in the informal economy make it possible to identify stylized facts. North Africa is an example of the challenges and results of formalizing the informal economy.
