Abstract

This study analyzes the long-term impact of external debt on the growth of the economies of sub-Saharan Africa. Based on a heterogeneous panel model estimated by the pooled mean group (PMG) method over the period 1980? 2012, the study shows the presence of a debt threshold of 23.05 % of GDP (respectively 155.92 % of exports). In addition, there is a heterogeneity in the distribution of debt thresholds, which is explained by the quality of institutions. Also, the increase in debt has a negative impact on economic growth in both resource-rich and resource-poor countries. However, resource-poor countries are more affected than resource-rich countries.
