Le boom du secteur minier des années 2000 : enjeux de soutenabilité dans la zone UEMOA

Abstract

The mining boom from 2000 to 2016 in the WAEMU raised questions about sustainability (ecological, social, and economic) and came to be associated with the contemporary operating conditions for mining activities (high commodity prices, regulatory methods, etc.). The impact of the boom measured using Adler and Magud?s (2015) approach to sustainability, based on the genuine saving indicator developed by the World Bank (Hamilton 2006). shows that the WAEMU would have remained sustainable in the weak sense, even during the boom. Individually, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Togo have failed to exploit booms in a sustainable way due to a lack of investment in productive capital.
