Abstract

We examine the effects of Forest Stewardship Council certification for the forest communities in Brazil, taking into account the pre-existing institutional and social dynamics. Our surveys? findings show that the introduction of certification has some positive effects for smallholders in the short term. However, because of the poor interaction between this private regulation and the existing public institutions, there is no real incentive for producers to make a long-term commitment to certified timber extraction.
