Abstract

Given that oil resources are becoming increasingly depleted, this study seeks to explore different models for « tourism after the end of the oil era ». After a series of discussions with experts in the tourist industry ? in the French speaking world and overseas ?, we drew up what we believe to be 5 possible scenarios for the post-oil tourism. Then we conducted a survey amongst 271 individuals in order to gauge their personal preference (n = 141) and then also to assess which scenario they believed would be the most probable in reality (n = 130). The results of this survey reveal a distinct preference for what we have chosen to call virtuous mass-tourism, as opposed to virtual tourism or immobilization. The results demonstrate a distinct correlation between the opinion of experts in the trade and ?tomorrow?s tourists?.
