Abstract

This article explains how the imaginary participates to innovation. It presents the conclusions of a study of several years in the telecommunication sector. The construction of the cyberspace has generated a lot of imaginary narratives. The cyberpunk movement has for example contributed a lot to the technophilia of engineers and scientists inventing cyberspace during the 1980s and 1990s. Investors have also been fascinated by this imaginary, which created a speculative bubble during the 1990s. Several conclusions relative to the study of this phenomenon are presented: The imaginary is useful for organizations in certain conditions. The cyberpunk movement is performative if it is filtered by experts who avoid it becomes delirious. Moreover, an utopian imaginary appears to be an important element for the dynamic of capitalism.
