Abstract

This paper explores the role of place attachment in collective mobilization in cases of spaces controversial to development projects, based on the notion of informed resistance. An analysis of three movements of resistance to infrastructures (highway, prison, landfill) over the long term leads to the following results : (1) place attachments play an important role in mobilization ; (2) place attachments evolve during mobilizations (through interactive loops between attachments and social and spatial dynamics) ; (3) place attachments can participate in the politicization of movements. The discussion of this article proposes an interpretation grid of the evolution of attachment to place in the planning conflict based on three stages : (1) emotional clash and individual anchoring ; (2) social and spatial translation of attachments ; (3) interactions between local and global attachments.
