L’école formelle constitue-t-elle la meilleure voie pour l’acquisition des compétences ? L’expérience du Cameroun

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis that formal education is the best way to acquire professional skills. To do this, the returns to formal secondary education are compared with the returns to skills acquisition outside the education system based on data from 2005 to 2010 from the Employment and Informal Sector Survey (EISS) in Cameroon. The estimation of the Mincer equations highlights three important results. First, the returns to formal education are greater than the returns to informal education. Second, we show that the returns to formal education declined between 2005 and 2010, while the returns to skills acquired outside the formal education system increased. Finally, the results show that the returns to formal training increase over the life cycle, while the returns to on-the-job training decrease.
