Abstract

This paper investigates the factors influencing the participation of households for recycling of domestic solid astes in Gaza City. The main aim is to identify the motivating and de-motivating factors. Stratified sampling technique was adopted and where the city was divided into four places of residency and each place was administered with questionnaires using a snowball approach 200 of the questionnaires were completed and returned. Results of the survey showed that the majority (89.5%) of citizens of Gaza city did not participate in recycling. Regarding awareness about recycling, there are 67% of the samples are the ones who do not know anything about the recycling of solid waste, while only 33% either heard about recycling solid waste, and 85.5% have never seen the recycling bins, while 14.5% have already seen it. The recycling activity is generally motivated by personal concerns for the environment and the promotion of good health, in addition to conserving resources for future generations, and looking for job, whereas participation in recycling services/activities is ‘demotivated’ by convenience that they never really thought about it, not used to it, not enough materials to recycle, too much effort needed, insufficient information, and inconvenience.
