Regional Analysis of Adult Education in Romania

Abstract

Adult learning is one of the key components of the Lisbon strategy. It is a major factor for the improvement of human capital of citizens after leaving initial education and is therefore a key element of both Employment, and Education and Training policies. In line with the comprehensive stipulations provided by Eurostat for the surveys of the EU Member States in the field of adult education this survey has covered a broad program of information. The main objective of the Adult Education Survey (AES) performed for the first time in Romania during 2008 is to provide detailed statistical usefully information to describe the participation of the adult population in learning activities. This is accomplished by collecting information regarding: participation in formal education, participation in non-formal education, participation in informal education, reasons for not participating in more learning / reasons for not participating in any learning at all, computer skills, language skills participation in social activities, field of learning (formal, non-formal and informal learning) (ISCED), purpose of learning (formal and non-formal learning) etc. The main source for data used (for Romania) in this paper is the AES (Adult Education Survey) carried out by National Institute of Statistics in 2008.
