    Activitatea intelectuală, ca element esenţial al culturii informaţionale, nu este caracterizată „de o dezordine ştiinţifică”, ci impune organizare şi rigoare, iar competenţele informaţionale dobândite în acest proces constituie factorul cheie în educaţia pe parcursul întregii vieţi. Acesta este primul pas pe calea realizării scopurilor educaţionale. Fiecare persoană trebuie să-şi dezvolte competenţele informaţionale de-a lungul întregii vieţi, dar mai ales, în anii de studii. Folosind capacităţile lor creative şi posibilităţile profesionale şi sprijinindu-se pe programe integrate în cursurile de instruire, specialiştii în ştiinţele informării trebuie să contribuie activ la procesul educaţional, ajutând elevii şi studenţii în aspiraţiile lor de acumulare şi perfecţionare, de cultivare a deprinderilor şi abilităţilor, cunoştinţelor şi valorilor, necesare pentru a continua aprofundarea şi diversificarea cunoştinţelor pe parcursul întregii vieţi
