    Autonomia, impusă de cunoştinţele acumulate de-a lungul timpului, la început progresiv, apoi exponenţial, în memoria de nemăsurat a umanităţii a provocat întotdeauna dorinţa de sistematizare ordonată a informaţiilor despre acestea. Şi în spaţiul românesc, debutând de la primele manifestări ale culturii scrise, necesitatea de bibliografie s-a amplificat perpetuu, a cunoscut teoretizări şi standardizări, ca urmare a creşterii producţiei de documente, dar şi a gradului de complexitate şi de diversitate a intereselor de cunoaştere ale omului şi societăţii.
