Autorul trece în revistă evoluţia învăţământului biblioteconomic începând din secolul al XIX-lea, odată cu apariţia sa, şi până astăzi, oprindu-se asupra dezvoltărilor contemporane şi a implicaţiilor acestora asupra profesiei de bibliotecar. O atenţie particulară este acordată învăţământului biblioteconomic american în condiţiile extinderii noilor tehnologii informaţionale şi a creşterii numărului de publicaţii digitale
