Abstract

In the course of the implementation of the Basel III regulation it becomes essential that German cooperative banks improve their process organisation in order to strengthen their competitiveness. Mergers may be an alternative to improve efficiency, but research based on ex post data shows only limited success. This paper discusses potential problem areas and outlines how synergy effects may be successfully mobilised.
