Abstract

Since several decades we observe a growing heterogeneity of primary cooperatives which manifests itself in dimensions like firm size, economic focus and a turning away from the regional principle. The traditional cooperative network is increasingly modified as it now incorporates competitive aspects too. Reviewing this development, we construct a hypothetical case where a merger of primary cooperatives of different size is discussed. Industrial economics as well as the theory of public goods serve as guidelines.
