Abstract

The crucial role and competitive relevance of employees in people based service settings, is a widely accepted fact amongst researchers and practitioners. While many service industries have already started to develop and design their human resource practices systematically to cope with future competitive challenges, the majority of the protagonist of the tourism industry is lacking such an approach. Drawing from selected scientific research streams outlining the pivotal role of the employee in people based service settings, conclusions confirming this hypothesis are set out in this article, analyzing the realities and current practices of human resource management approaches in the tourism industry. As a result this paper aims to depict the necessity and complexity of the human resource management dimension many protagonist in the tourism industry are about to confront in the near future.
