Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges for the global tourism industry. However, the pandemic is also seen as watershed moment and turning point towards more sustainability in post-Covid-19 tourism. Such positive transformation also requires tourists’ consciousness and their willingness to change as well as the reduction of the attitude-behaviour-gap. This empirical paper addresses existing knowledge gaps by examining the attitudes towards sustainability among the German, Austrian and Swiss travelling population. It also explores whether such attitudes have changed between 2018 and 2020. Generally, results show a certain restraint in case of sustainability aspects that require active engagement. Across the three case studies, somewhat positive shifts towards more sustainability between 2018 and 2020 were found and the Swiss show the greatest willingness to behave sustainably during holiday trips. Thus, this empirical paper provides an important contribution for more sustainable tourism post-Covid-19.
