Abstract

This contribution addresses the key challenge of qualitative labour research to generate evidence beyond the corporate context. It proposes a qualitative research methodology based on social theory that embeds the labour process in the social organisation of reproduction. Firstly, following the extended case approach it offers a theory-reflexive method capable of accounting for the relationship between theory of society and the empirical case and allowing for controlled and systematic dialogue between both. Secondly, following on from this, it suggests a research perspective based on capitalism theory, which aims to analytically relate the different conditions of reproduction of social groups to the workplace. Finally, it discusses how this integrative research perspective can be fruitfully used in analysing the labour process.
