Abstract

The BMBF-funded labour studies are distinguished by their transdisciplinary approach, emphasising close collaboration with practitioners. However, the production of transdisciplinary knowledge is a highly intricate and consequently challenging process. Whether the methodological requirements of transdisciplinary research strategies can be met within established funding structures has yet to be adequately addressed. This article addresses this research gap and examines the BMBF-funded labour studies as an example. It first presents the transdisciplinary research strategy and, in particular, the dialogue orientation as its methodological core feature. It then presents and evaluates the results of an empirical analysis of selected BMBF funding programmes, as well as nine expert interviews. Finally, it discusses possible modifications to the structural and programmatic framework conditions.
