Abstract

This paper shows the impact of a child’s birth on the occupational careers of women. Using the balanced longitudinal data of the German Socio-economic panel (SOEP 1984-2007), gender differences in terms of class mobility are analyzed. Especially the way of development is analyzed concerning the professional careers of men and women during the years to come after a child is born. The initial point of this gender comparative study was that both men and women belong to the same occupational class (Goldthorpe scheme). It results in the fact that women frequently are degraded into lower classes after re-entering the labour market. Moreover the chance of women compared to men in the same class status to realize a professional upgrading is significantly reduced.
