Abstract

A study covering a representative sample of the employed population in German and French speaking Switzerland (n=2’020) by means of a telephone survey, traces the question of the extent of sexual harassment at the workplace using multiple perspectives. The study of personal affliction shows, that 28.3% of women and 10% of men were sexually harassed at least once during their professional life. Around every second person (54.8% of women and 48.6% of men) was confronted with unwanted, potentially harassing behaviour. Thereby, general verbal actions (comments, jokes etc.) and nonverbal actions (gazing, gestures, pictures etc.) were clearly more frequent than directed body focussed ones (such as clutches, kisses). Occurrences of sexual extortion, sexual infringements or rape are comparatively seldom. The article presents the study and derives proposals for further research and the praxis.
